14 October - New Ales! - Continuing our quest to hunt down and make available England's best beers, we are once again having a change around on the pumps. It is farewell to supreme champion Rudgate Ruby Mild. We have one last barrel of this lovely brew currently on the pumps. Once this is gone,.....well its gone! Depending on customer preference, we may try and get this again later in the year.
Tomorrow we take delivery of several barrels from Buntingford Breweries. One is the silver medal winning Britannia (a best bitter), the other a very special seasonal brew, Polar Star, which has been so popular it has survived several seasons! These will be on the pumps on Friday.
We will keep Butcombes on as this has proven very popular with Rose and Crowners and I have to agree is a lovely pint. I will be very interested to see how this compares with Britannia as they are both CAMRA silver medal winners in their respective categories (bitter and best bitter).
12 October - New Menu! - Today we launch a new menu for autumn. We have incorporated into this new menu lots of great ideas and suggestions received from our diners during our 8 weeks in business! We have retained a very talented consultant chef to help us with this menu and are very excited about it. We have kept a couple of favourites from the old menu but the rest is brand new and the desserts are to die!
We will be following this up shortly with a new lunch and a Xmas menu along with a diary of events and activities up to and including New Year festivities.
Keep tuned!
14 October - Christmas Menus! - Christmas menus are here! Download them from the Menus page and be sure to book early!
New Bike Rides - Bruce and his mates are keen local mountain bikers and it is not entirely unknown for them to drop in to the R&C for a cleansing cooling pint at the end of a long hot ride. Bruce has uploaded some rides to share on our Days Out for Mountain Bikers pages.
28 October - Butcombes is Back! Many will be pleased to learn that this local favourite is back on the pumps at the Rose and Crown. Yay!

Halloween Magic! - Thanks to all those who made it such a memorable Halloween Night. It was great to see so many people enjoying the decorations and atmosphere in the pub. Congratulations to those brave souls who made it through the gross-out games!
Help with Solving This Crime - Some time between 11.00am and 2.00pm on Thursday 5th December our 'A' sign placed on Station Rd at the bottom of Ladysmith Rd went missing. It is large and heavy so someone must have stopped their vehicle and appropriated it. Given the size of the sign, the vehicle would have to have been a van or large estate car or people mover. This is a very busy road with lots of Rose and Crown customers living close by. Someone will have seen something!
And on the Topic of Signs! - Someone has made a complaint to the roading authority about our sign at the top of Vicarage Lane. Under threat of action we have now removed this sign. This, combined with the theft of our other sign (see below) has left us with no way of advertising our presence tucked away down Vicarage Lane to passing traffic.
All That Jazz! - A great night was had by all at Wednesday's Jazz night. The band was great, the restaurant and bar were both full!
Remembrance Day Sunday - Today we remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. Past and present service men and women especially welcome today. Sunday lunch (12.30pm to 3.00pm) as usual including a Lamb Roast.
A Sign From Geoff! - In a recent post I informed readers that a petty criminal had stolen our 'A' sign from the bottom of Ladysmith Rd. Well, this morning Rose and Crown customer Geoff and his friends were out walking at the bottom of the Pitstone Hill (at the Pitstone end of Trooper Rd to Aldbury) and found our sign thrown in the bushes.
A big thanks to Geoff for finding this and for taking the trouble to return it to us. Needless to say Geoff will not be paying for the next few pints!
Clearly the offender or offenders are not overly endowed with intellligence. We will try to get the sign fingerprinted to see what that can tell us. In the meantime if anyone knows anything about this crime or wants to tell us something beforehand, then please call me in confidence.
Art for Christmas - Just a reminder that the artworks displayed at the Rose and Crown are all for sale. They are all by local artists and most are of local scenes. They would make lovely Christmas gifts. All works are priced and you can ask any of the staff if you want more information.

Exhibition of Artworks
To celebrate the arrival of spring, from 15th May we have installed a new exhibition of digital works from local artist Luis Costa. For this exhibition Luis has focussed on Bluebells found in local woods. These beautiful flowers appear in the wild for a very short time but Luis' work will ensure visitors to the Rose and Crown will enjoy them a bit longer!
All works are for sale, most at the very reasonable price of £55.

27th June - England v Germany. Once again your country needs you folks! We will be showing the game in the main bar and on a 7 foot screen in the garden. The barbeque will be fired up and the weather looks promising. Lunch service will continue as normal and the restaurant is set aside as a football-free haven!
Sporting Weekend! - There is some great sport coming up this weekend. Some superb games in the World Cup plus of course Wimbledon. Weather permitting we will have the big screen and barbeque in the garden as well as the television in the bar. The restaurant will be a sport free oasis!
The Ivinghoe/Pitstone Annual Charity Walk is back on again! Here are the details:
When: Sunday 18th July
Where: Leaving by Coach from the Ivinghoe Green (opposite The Ivinghoe Library) and returning on foot to The Rose and Crown for a barbeque and well earned pint!
What Time: Those walking 25 miles leave by coach at 9.00am and get dropped off at Chinnor. Those walking 15 miles leave by coach at 12.30pm and get dropped off at Chequers, Butlers Cross. Those walking 11 miles leave by coach at 2.00pm and get dropped off at Wendover. Those walking 5 miles leave by coach at 4.00pm and get dropped off at Wiggington. All 4 groups walk from their drop-off point and will arrive back at the Rose and Crown at approximately 6.00pm.
What Charity will Benefit: Iain Rennie Hospice
How do I join in as a Walker: Complete the entry form online at : http://www.roseandcrownivinghoe.com/Charity-Walk.html or pick up an entry form from the pub in person or download a printable copy HERE. Alternatively call The Rose and Crown on 01296 668 472 and they will send you a copy. Once the Rose and Crown has received your entry form your name will be included on the Sponsorship page.
How does Iain Rennie Hospice Benefit: By walkers getting family and friends to sponsor them and/or self-sponsorship.
How does the sponsorship work: A Just Giving web page has been setup for the Walk (http://www.justgiving.com/The-Rose-and-Crown-Ivinghoe-2010-Walk) which enables sponsorship by Credit/Debit/PayPal. The Rose and Crown will administer the Just Giving web page and include the names (and distances) of all walkers. Using this method donations are augmented by the Government's Gift Aid contribution (less credit/debit card/PayPal fees and a 5% commission). For those that do not want to use the internet, just get a sponsorship form from The Rose and Crown and collect your sponsorship monies and hand them in to The Rose and Crown and they will process it for you.
I cannot do the walk but still want to join in: We need volunteers to staff water stations along the route. We also need volunteers to work the barbeque at The Rose and Crown. All proceeds of the barbeque go to pay for the coaches and any left over funds go to the Iain Rennie Hospice. We would also appreciate any donations for a raffle. The Rose and Crown have started things off by donating a dinner for two. Failing all that, just turn up at The Rose and Crown around 6.00pm on the day and buy a sausage or two!
(i)Vinghoe Velos - One year into the successful re-launch of the Rose & Crown, established as the premier venue in Ivinghoe and Pitstone for the finely honed athlete…. the time has come to launch the (i) Vinghoe Veloes…..Ivinghoe’s first cycling club.
If you’ve managed to wander down to the Rose and Crown from Wellcroft, walked up Ladysmith, made it up from Albion Road, you’ve the stamina to make the grade in this club; and if you don’t meet any of the above criteria you are still welcome to join. You may have gathered that this is the club for those that are perhaps not too serious about cycling, and so if you are a wannabe Bradley Wiggins, or just a Bradley Wing-it, you are welcome. Interested? The first meeting of the (i) Vinghoe Velos will be held at the Rose & Crown on Tuesday 13th July @ 7.30pm.
All welcome..…If you can’t make the 13th or have any questions, please contact Gary @ goons100@tiscali.co.uk for further info

The atmosphere was great, thanks largely to John Bercow's very funny opening speech and his brief stint as guest barman. A big thanks to all those who came on the night, to Colin Beatty for the videos and photos, to Roger Hillier for his photos and to the Rt Hon John Bercow for being such a good sport. Here are some photos and videos from Colin and Roger of the evening.

Britain’s Best Beer! – It’s that time of year again! The supreme winner at the CAMRA 2010 Great British Beer Festival is Harvest Pale from Castle Rock Brewery, Nottingham. It is no secret at The Rose and Crown that we make it our business to bring our customers the finest available product in the best possible condition. So folks, it will come as no surprise to learn that we have secured a supply of this very fine brew. It will be on the pumps from Thursday 2nd September. As is often the case, supplies are limited so don’t miss out! In closing this topic your scribe admits to having formally QA’d this product and pronounces it entirely satisfactory!
Tasting Notes: Harvest Pale is brewed with a gently-kilned malt, and an aromatic blend of American hops added during the brewing process gives this 3.8% alc pale beer exceptional poise. Its distinct hop flavour leads to a crisp finish. Harvest Pale has firmly established itself as Castle Rock’s Flagship Beer.
New Chef - We are very pleased to announce at the Rose and Crown the arrival of Gareth Wardle and Maryse Vann. Gareth is a career chef who learnt his craft at such establishments as the double rosette awarded Old Bridge Hotel, Huntingdon and the Felich Fach Griffin Hotel, Brecon - also holder of two rosettes. Gareth's partner Maryse accompanies him to the Rose and Crown. She has worked in front of house roles in the UK, US and France for the past ten years. Both Gareth and Maryse hold advanced NVQ qualifications in food, drink, hospitality and tourism.
Gareth and Maryse have moved into the apartment above the Rose and Crown and will work from Wednesday to Sunday, starting this Wednesday 29th September. Please make them feel welcome!
We are thrilled that Maryse and Gareth have joined the Rose and Crown. We can look forward to exciting innovations coming out of the kitchen!

The Vatican, Rome, Canterbury Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral......IVINGHOE!
With the New Year well underway, it is nice to reflect back on a very busy festive season. It was great that so many local folk made the Rose and Crown part of their festivities as well as dropping in for a warming pint and snacks as part of a winter country walk. There even appeared to be broad agreement that the heavy snow was best endured in front of a warm fire and a good pint at The Rose and Crown!
One of the highlights was the concert at St Mary’s by the St.Peter's Cathedral Choir from Adelaide, South Australia. By all counts the concert was beautiful. The 50 or 60 strong choir party then adjourned to the Rose and Crown for supper before departing for London, Rome and The Vatican. Couldn’t resist snapping the sleeve of the ‘tour jersey’ which puts Ivinghoe in its rightful place – on the world stage!

Clubs and Community - The Vinghoe Velos (http://www.ivinghoevelos.org.uk) continue to go from strength to strength, meeting for a ride at the Rose and Crown every Sunday at 10.00am. They will also be restarting the beginner rides on the 22nd Jan at 2.00pm for those that want to put in some practice or get some tips before trying out the Sunday rides.
The Photo Group meets every second Monday, restarting for the New Year on Monday 24th Jan. New members always welcome!
We have also had some expressions of interest for two new groups – a Knitting/Sewing circle and a Bridge Group. If anyone else is interested in these please keep an eye on the Rose and Crown website for updates or call Alistair on 07760 777761 to express interest.
Quiz nights continue every second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday at 8.00pm.
Six Nations - This magnificent contest starts once again on 4th Feb and the Rose and Crown will be showing all fixtures wherever possible. The first few fixtures are listed in the diary above.
Signage - We are pleased to report a very satisfactory outcome of our quest for non-visually polluting, legal signage. Many will recall that, after some 12 months, the Buckinghamshire County Council approved brown tourist signs at the bottom of Ladysmith Rd (erected on the existing Golf Course sign post) and the top of Vicarage Lane (fixed to a new post to be erected alongside St Mary's church wall).
After a process of consultation (facilitated by the Parish Council) it became apparent that some concerns were held concerning the visual impact of a new post outside St Mary's church at the top of Vicarage Lane. We at the Rose and Crown shared these concerns. After discussions with owners of properties adjoining the Vicarage Lane intersection, the Emlyn Jones and Boersma households very generously volunteered to have the signs fixed to their boundary walls.
There is wide consensus that this is a very satisfactory compromise and we are extremely grateful to the Emlyn Jones and Boersma households as well as to the Parish Council for their management of the matter.
Valentines Celebration - We are celebrating Valentines on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th February with a fabulous special menu. Download it from our Menu page and book your table!
Knitting Group - First Meeting! There has been quite a bit of interest in the proposed sewing group. To get things underway there will be a first meeting on Monday 31st January at 7.30pm. Come along and join in and get this group underway!
Needlework Group We are pleased to report the successful conclusion of the first Needlework Group meeting. It was a great turnout and was pronounced a success by all attending. The meeting agreed:
1. To meet every second Monday at 7.30pm
2. To extend the scope of the group from knitting to all needlework.
3. The format of the group is an informal one where members bring items they are working on and discuss and share knowledge and ideas and have a general chat
So the next meeting will be on Monday 14 Feb and this group will now become a fixture on the Rose and Crown calendar with reminders being sent out prior to meetings.
Bridge Group - We have had quite a few expressions of interest in a bridge group meeting at the Rose and Crown. We are currently trying to sort our meeting times and will report these shortly.
Bridge Group Update - We Last night (Monday 21st) the bridge group met for the first time. The turnout was very encouraging and the meeting was judged a success by all attending. It was agreed to meet every second Monday. So the next meeting will be on Monday 7th March. All welcome!

The Rather Interesting Quiz, with questions written by QI-writer Justin Pollard - July 5th, 7.30 pm. Our very own researcher and author in residence, Pitstonian Roger Moorhouse (http://www.rogermoorhouse.com) has decided to swim the channel. 'We know that us British all love France and the French' I hear you say, 'but why in the name of all that is wholesome would he do that?'
Well, partly because it is there and on completion he can quote Hillary, but mainly to raise funds for Aspire - a charity which helps with the rehabilitation of those with spinal injuries (http://www.aspire.org.uk/). Please take a minute have a look at the work Aspire do.
Paralysis through spinal injury must surely be one of the most devastating occurrences for a person and their family to cope with. Whenever I come across someone who has to live with such an injury it is always a "there but for the grace of god go I" moment.
So Roger and a group of his buddies have teamed up to swim the channel in August to raise funds for Aspire.
At the Rose and Crown we are right behind Roger in this endeavour and are very keen to help out. Grateful not to be asked to don speedos and vaseline ourselves, we are going to run a quiz night and donate supper for all participants.
The quiz night will be held on July 5 at 7.30pm. Roger himself will be quiz master. The quiz will be written by Roger together with Justin Pollard, a writer for QI.
Supper will comprise sharing platters served at the quiz tables during the quiz. We will be serving Mediterranean, English and Asian platters and we always make sure there is plenty of food at these events. The bar will operate as normal on the night.
The quiz will run in teams of four. So come along as a team or alternatively get put into a team on the night.
The price is £10 per head including supper and all proceeds go to Aspire. Bookings are essential and numbers are limited. We think this will be a very popular event so please book early by text to 07760 777761 or email to info@roseandcrownivinghoe.com .
Fathers Day Lunch - Sunday 19th Jun - As well as our normal lunch menu, on June 19, as a treat for Dad on Father's Day, we will be serving a rare roast sirloin of beef with all the trimmings. The price for this is £12.95 and bookings for this special lunch are required. The normal menu will also be served as usual.
80 Years Young! - Henry has been coming to the Rose and Crown for 67 years and turns 80 on June 26. Please drop in to wish him well and perhaps get one or two 'in' for him!
He usually comes in on a Sunday at 12.00pm and then again at 5.00pm so either of those times on the 26th you should catch him. Gordon Hewittson has volunteered Ngaire to make a cake (thanks Ngaire!) and we will cut that with him just after 12.00pm.
We have made a birthday card for him and this is currently kept behind the bar. So please leave a message in this next time you are in!
The Walls are Bare! - Folks, we know the walls look a little bare at the moment. All but two of Luis's wonderful pictures are sold. We will have a new exhibition up shortly!
The Rose & Crown (Ivinghoe) sponsored walk - in aid of Iain Rennie Hospice at Home is on Sunday 17-Jul-11. There are 4 walks to choose from (5, 10, 15 & challenge 25 miles) starting from Ivinghoe Lawn finishing at the Rose & Crown where there will be a BBQ, and an isotonic ale too, to celebrate your success. The routes will start at different times throughout the day so that walkers can arrive back at the Rose & Crown at similar times. Why not enjoy the Chilterns stunning views while raising funds for a very good cause?
To make sponsorship simpler a Just Giving page has been setup (http://www.justgiving.com/Rose-and-Crown-Walk-2011) - or organise your sponsors independently and put the money in the Iain Rennie donation boxes in the Rose and Crown. We would really appreciate if walkers could pre-register (do it online here or paper forms are available from the Rose & Crown). If you are unable to do this, walkers will be welcome on the day too.
Starting times from Ivinghoe Lawn:
25 Miles: 09:00
15 Miles: 12:00
10 Miles: 13:30
5 Miles: 14:30
Target is to arrive back at the Rose and Crown around 17:00
